Shankar Suryanarayanan is a visionary operations management executive who has established and continually improved global supply chains, multi-plant manufacturing and distribution networks. He has 20+ years of operations management experience creating significant value for Life Science and Industrial companies during start up, transformation and M&A situations.
Shankar has done business on six continents and lived in US, Switzerland, Germany, Singapore and India while working for blue chip organizations like Roche, Novartis, Monitor Group and Emerson Electric. As a member of the executive committee at Roche Consumer Health, Shankar established a highly responsive technical operations function which was fully integrated with and focused exclusively on the OTC business. Outstanding performance earned him and his team the President's award for "Manufacturing response to China SARS crisis" and Roche Olympiad award for "Supply chain software roll out". He was a key person in the eventual sale of Roche's OTC business and its successful integration with Bayer Consumer Care. At Sandoz, the generics division of Novartis, Shankar was instrumental in post-merger integration of $1.5 billion spend on materials, manufacturing services and licensed products from 1000+ suppliers. He developed and implemented life cycle based sourcing strategies for products in development, growth and mature phases to achieve 7% annual net savings while implementing plans to reduce supplier base by 40%. Prior to entering the Life Science industry, at Emerson Electric's Fisher Controls division, Shankar was a key architect of the global manufacturing and supply chain strategy.He established an impressive track record in US and Asia as a thought leader and implementer of customer focused, best cost manufacturing and supply base networks. The outstanding results which significantly improved Fisher Controls’ operating margins, quality and responsiveness were recognized by awards from Fisher, Emerson and professional organizations. These achievements prompted Monitor Group to invite him to join its operations management practice and lead fellow consultants and clients to leverage operations for competitive advantage. Most recently, at Herbalife a NYSE listed direct selling company, as Senior Vice President of Global Operations, Shankar had end-to-end supply chain responsibility to provide nutrition and skin care products to 1.8 million distributors in 65 countries. During his tenure, he energized the global operations team and helped the company achieve record sales and profits despite very challenging circumstances.
Shankar has written articles on global operations management, doing business in emerging markets and improving business competitiveness. He has a M.S. in Management from MIT Sloan School of Management and M.S. in Mechanical & Aerospace engineering from University of Missouri in Columbia. His undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering is from the Indian Institute of Technology.
